IEEE AFRICON 2015: IEEE Women in Engineering (WiE) Workshop

- no title specified

Often in science, technology and engineering education the number of women students is much less than men. Also, among women graduates in these fields, very few are leaders in their career. The aim of IEEE Women in Engineering workshop is to encourage the active involvement of African women in science, technology and engineering education as well as their professions. As part of the IEEE AFRICON 2015 conference, the WIE workshop further strengths the “Green Innovation for African Renaissance” theme of the conference. The three invited talks by prominent women engineers will inspire students and young professionals to excel in their future endeavors and show how the contributions of women in science, engineering and technology (SET) education, research, innovation and career development can accelerate the pace of socio-economic development of Africa. In this respect the IEEE WIE activities, which will be exemplified by Prof. Noel Schulz’s speech, tries to concretize the commitment of IEEE and the advantages of such activities by highlighting best practices and success stories from different parts of the world. The speech by H.E. Minister Demitu Hambisa, Minister of Science and Technology and Mihret Demissew will highlight government, public and private sector roles in supporting women engineers SET excellence and contributions. A panel discussion will then take up issues such as enabling policy and projects for successful SET career development and how to tackle the grand challenges facing Africa. In addition, the possibility of establishing a IEEE WIE chapter in Ethiopia and the wider African region will be discussed in support of the African Union Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy, STISA-2024.
