The first African Railway of Excellence is built in Ethiopia

On Saturday October 14, 2017 African Railway Center of Excellence (ARCE) offered a half day workshop focused on “Education and Research in Railway Engineering”at Addis Ababa Institute of Technology (AAiT).

Ambassadors from Uganda, Rwanda and Somalia; and students from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, Somalia, Eritrea and other African countries and Stake holders and invited guests attended the workshop.

The workshop started by the opening speech of H.E Dr. Samuel Kifle, State Minister of Education, then by the welcoming speech of Grants Coordination office of Addis Ababa University.

Dr. Daniel Tilahun, A/Head of ARCE made a presentation on Education and Research in Railway Engineering. In his Presentation, he explained the brief history and foundation of ARCE.

By the support of World Bank Group (WBG), Addis Ababa Institute of Technology has designed and developed African Railway Center of Excellence (ARCE) Program to train African students in railway disciplines.

ARCE is basically responsible for creating skilled manpower in railway technology and engineering by establishing a well-organized education and research institute over the foundation of the already existing Railway Engineering programs. The center has produced over 300 Msc graduates in the field of railway Civil Engineering, Rolling Stock Engineering and Electrical Engineering for Railway system.

The first railway education program in Ethiopia and Africa was launched in 2012, in Addis Ababa Institute of Technology (AAiT), Addis Ababa University in collaboration with ERC.

Mr. Abiy Getachew, Chief Officer, Research and Development, Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) also made presentation on Development of Railway Technology in Ethiopia.

During the workshop, Ambassadors agreed on the need for excellence education for Africans, which will help to eradicate the existing problem of transportation in the continent.

Following the presentation, the workshop has a time for discussion and sharing of ideas about ARCE and railway technologies. Invited guests and Students discussed about helping the progression of sustainable development for railway industry for Africa.

Finally, Dr. Esayas G/Yohannes, Executive Director of AAiT indicated the sincere commitment of AAiT to make everything possible for the fulfillment of ARCE plan.
